Googling “how to stress relief” will return almost millions in results, some more helpful than others. The problem is, in our “I just want to fix this or make it go away” mentality, we too often treat the symptoms but not the core issue or cause. We attempt to compartmentalize stress when, in reality, it affects our whole person.

Stress takes an undeniable toll on our whole self. Most of all, stress derails our relationship with God, distracting us from his provision, providence, and goodness. These biblical methods are not novel or groundbreaking. Instead, they are steadfast tools that help us re-center our hearts on the Lord. –tifwe

Many who struggle with stress and anxiety develop their own ways of coping along the way. Some respond to stress by snacking constantly on junk food. Some drink to take the edge off. Others camp out in front of the television for hours on end.

How To Relieve The Stress

None of these are healthy ways of dealing with stress and anxiety. Most of us intrinsically know this. What we don’t often realize, however, is that responding to stress in these ways can actually work against our body’s ability to fight back and get healthy, not to mention what it can do to our soul.

In other words, unhealthy coping mechanisms often make it worse, creating an endless cycle of stress and self-medication.

Stress management is so important! Everyone suffers from stress at one time or another. How we naturally deal with it depends in large part on who we are. For some, emotional stress causes physical illness. Others might become hyper-productive. On the other hand, some people under stress shut down mentally and emotionally. And, of course, there are a variety of other responses. Stress is a common human experience, particularly in a world where the demands for our time and attention seem to be unending. Our jobs, health, family, friends, and even ministry activities can overwhelm us. The ultimate solution to stress is to surrender our lives to God and seek His wisdom regarding priorities as well as His enabling to do the things to which He calls us. He always gives enough, so we need not be defeated by stress. – Got Questions

How To Be Less Stressed

These “how to stress relief” tips may help you be less stressed in this very moment!

1. Pray. Ask God to show you how to live with less stress. Give God everything that is stressing you. Ask Him to take these burdens, guide you on how to handle them and give you His peace. Take a deep breath. Just talk to Him. You do not need a special prayer guide. Just speak to Him as If you are speaking to your friend. God is big enough for you to come with all your heart and all your raw emotions. Surrender it all to Him.  He waits for you! Philippians 4:6-7
2. Be aware of your thoughts.  Slow down for a moment. Read a devotion or an encouraging Bible verse.  Think on good things. Memorize the Fruits of the Spirit. If your thoughts do not produce one of the Fruits of the Spirits then stop thinking those negative thoughts. Negative thoughts bring stress. Give it to God. Let Him comfort you. Galatians 5:22-23
3. Call an encouraging friend. Sometimes having a godly friend to speak to who will understand, but knows when to pull the reins in on you if you go too far off balanced in your thought process is so beneficial. Getting things off your chest in a safe place can sometimes help. We need each other. Praying for each other is so important. Seek someone who will pray with you and encourage you, but first seek God above any person. Proverbs 27:17
4.  Get up and move around. Take a walk outside and breath some fresh air.  Do some sort of exercise or stretching. Research says being active can help boost those feel good endorphins. Philippians 4:13
5. Listen to some music. Turn on some good Christian Praise music. I know when I’m in a mood or stressed it’s amazing how music can quickly turn my feeling around. Psalm 100:1-5

Stress merely indicates an area of our life where our flesh is still on the throne. The life that is totally submitted to God is marked by the trust born out of a thankful heart.

Be free in Christ! Let’s remember to trust God. He is the creator of this universe. He is our creator. He is big enough to handle our problems and stress. Remind yourself who He is and who you are in Him!! John 14:27

    Great tips. They seem so simple but in the moment it's hard to remember them. I called a friend a couple of years ago completely stressed out. She told me to got sit int he sunshine and eat a fried egg sandwich while the kids ate lunch inside…did the trick!

    Wonderful tips. Stress definitely fills our lives and gets in the way of allowing Christ to live through us. I love #5. I start each morning with praise music just to get myself focused and centered on Him before I start the day. I remember long ago (about 20 years) commuting 1/2 hour to my teaching job. On my way home, I would listen to classic rock (which I do like, but it's NOT the best idea for bringing down high stress levels). It didn't take me long to realize I needed to change my music choices in order to unwind. 🙂
