Having a bad, exhausting, things aren’t going as you planned, someone made decaf coffee instead of regular, your husband isn’t being there for you and your kids are hanging from the ceiling like monkeys and made a huge mess of the house…kind of day?

All these things can make the ugly BAD ATTITUDE monster come out of us. Yep, happens to us all.

Here is my list of ways we can improve our bad attitudes on a daily basis.

Improve your attitude, maintaining a positive attitude,

#1 Seek God with Persistence

Inquire after Him. Pursue Him. Explore Him. Sounds simple enough, but it is so important to be consistent in our relationship with God. Renew your mind and affirm yourself in the Word of God. Let it encourage you and satisfy you. Jeremiah 29:13-14 says You will find God, if you seek Him with ALL your heart. Jesus is our Prince of Peace!

#2 Change Your Surroundings.

If you must remain indoors, add fresh flowers to your desk or kitchen table to brighten up the room. Open the windows and get some fresh air. Get up and take a break or a short walk, breathing deeply and exhaling your frustrations. Focusing on God’s promises. If you keep negative people in your circle of friends, then it might be time to clean out your friends list. If you have the time, get outside, go for a long walk and soak up the sunshine.

Proverbs 13:20 “He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will be destroyed.”

#3 Learn to Lighten Up!

Don’t take yourself or life so seriously. Dig out the old sense of humor box that is buried deep inside of you and put it to use. Laugh at yourself. Extend grace to others. Watch a funny movie, listen to a happy song or read a humorous book. Laughing, often times, will lift the fog of a bad attitude!

Proverbs 17:22 “A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones.”

#4 Forgive

Forgive others, even without an apology.  It’s easy to get discouraged and even hurt by what others do or don’t do to us. Be ready and resolved in your mind to let it go and give it to God when others hurt you. With full abandonment. Your attitude will improve when you can extend forgiveness freely. (This isn’t offering excuses for their bad behavior or actions, but rather freeing you from the prison that unforgiveness can put us in. )

#5 Stop Complaining!

Seriously. It’s hard all over. You cannot change what others do around you. Not at all. You cannot control your spouse, kids, boss, friends, etc. BUT you can start to take control of what you allow your mind to dwell on and how you respond to others. Philippians 4:8 tells us to think on GOOD things.

#6 Keep a Gratitude Journal and Show Appreciation.

Be thankful for the little things. A gratitude journal will focus our thoughts and heart on the positive side of people, situations and events. Take the time to write down at least three things you are grateful for. Even if it’s the smallest of things.

1 Thessalonians 5:18 “in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

Let’s take steps to improving our attitude. It is a daily choice we each have to make. Trust God to guide you as you lean on Him for your peace.

  1. Thanks so much for this. After a very hard day (which happened to occur after a very hard week), I've been on-edge and off-kilter, so these wise words were so good for me to hear.

  2. When I start getting a bad attitude I start thanking the Lord for EVERYTHING – the dirty socks, the open drawers, the slow car in front of me, on and on and on until something happens – I am changed in the praising. Powerful but true. Blessing my sister and new friend…..Neighboring you at Truth and Grace Link up

  3. Great list! Sometimes I just take a moment and have some tea, but of course that's not always possible. Sometimes I stop and try to find things to be thankful for, there is usually something, and it's a good attitude check!

  4. Lots of wisdom and excellent reminders in this post, Starla.

When I am in a bad mood I think about what Christ endured for me on the cross. It completely transforms my attitude.

I also crank up the praise music and sing loudly to God.

Counting my blessings makes me feel better as well.

Thanks for sharing. Blessings to you and yours.

  5. For me, writing helps. Especially on my blog. I don't want to sound depressed, so I look for ways to find hope in the situation and share those with others. By the time I'm done, I feel better too. 🙂 Thanks for these tips! I need to work on the no complaining part. 😡

  6. I am focusing on gratitude-you can't be grateful and angry or upset at the same time. Gratefulness for small things like a grandchild's smile to achieving a challenging goal. A daily work in progress

  7. I love "stop complaining" ! How true this is! It is easy to be stuck in a rut when we focus on our problems. When we choose to turn our focus on God our day improves because our focus is on a being higher than us!

  8. I really changed my attitude and not forgiving other information have this burned carrying weight me down
