Bible Verses For Suffering {Plus Printable}

Are you looking for Bible Verses for suffering? Life can be exhaustingly hard sometimes. Death, trauma, affairs, betrayals, abuse and major accidents are all a part of life. Christians are not exempt from suffering.

Suffering in this world is inevitable. No one escapes times of trouble, sorrow and pain.

I hate suffering. But if it wasn’t for what I’ve been through, that deep dark pain, I wouldn’t be where I am now with my faith and walk with God.

Suffering saved me from complacency and hell.

The evil and suffering in this world are greater than any of us can comprehend. But evil and suffering are not ultimate. God is. Satan, the great lover of evil and suffering, is not sovereign. God is.

John Piper

What Does The Bible Say About Suffering

Many characters in bible time suffered. Suffering is on almost every page of the Bible. We read and study these people and their stories to help us have hope, comfort, and wisdom when it’s our turn to suffer.

For example, Paul, the author of many New Testament books, suffered, yet was one of the most thankful men in the bible. We know for certain that Paul wrote at least thirteen letters that are included in the New Testament.

Theology at work says, “Paul needs every ounce of courage because of the heavy sufferings he knows his work will bring. “The Holy Spirit testifies to me in every city that imprisonment and persecutions are waiting for me,” (Acts 20:23) he says. He is kidnapped (Acts 21:27), beaten (Acts 21:30-3123:3), threatened (Acts 22:2227:42), arrested many times (Acts 21:3322:243123:3528:16), accused in lawsuits (Acts 21:3422:3024:1-225:2728:4), interrogated (Acts 25:24-27), ridiculed (Acts 26:24), ignored (Acts 27:11), shipwrecked (Acts 27:41) and bitten by a viper (Acts 28:3). Tradition says that Paul is eventually put to death for his work, although this is not recounted anywhere in the Bible.”

Another example is Ruth and Naomi. Naomi, Orpah and Ruth suffered terrible misfortune: their husbands all died. Feeling stuck and alone, Naomi return to her home in Bethlehem. Ruth, though a Moabite, went with her. They set out on the long journey, arriving in time for the barley harvest. They lost their husband, Naomi lost her sons and her husband. Grief hung heavy over this family like a suffocating black cloud. In the end, God brought redemption through a man named Boaz.

Or what of Hosea? Remember his story? A prophet that God called him to marry a prostitute. Myself having gotten out of a marriage that was riddled with affairs and betrayals at the hand of someone that promised to love and protect me, this hits home deeper than the rest. God used Hosea in a painfully unique way. God turned his life and marriage into an example for the people of God. Hosea represented God and Gomer, the prostitute, represented God’s people.

Bible verses for Suffering

I have a huge list of bible verses for suffering in my printable below, but here are a few to get your started.

And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.

1 Peter 5:10

Here we are told that after we have suffered for a little while, Christ will restore us and make us strong. We all hate the idea of suffering. Myself included. I’m first in line to complain about it, but we are called to it. I hate it, but I’m thankful for it.

For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.

2 Corinthians 4:17

Again, we are reminded that suffering will come. Here in this verse, Paul calls suffering a light and momentary trouble that will give us an eternal weight in glory. Meaning, are suffering isn’t for nothing!

in fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,

2 Timothy 3:12

Is it hard to read this verse? God tells us in advance that we will face persecution. Since we know in advance, how are you preparing your heart, mind and walk with God for this suffering?

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;

and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.

When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned;

 the flames will not set you ablaze.

Isaiah 43:2

Here we are reminded of the great comfort that awaits those that walk through hard times. Many times over, the Bible reminds us that God walks with us and he is close to the brokenhearted.

Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.

James 1:12

The reward! Yes, a reward for those who have made it through the hard suffering and have stood the test. The Bible tells us we will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.

As I think back on the moments in my life that brought the deepest of sufferings, I remember praying for God to help me and see me through, because I couldn’t do it on my own. I was able to kneel before God and know that in the situation of my suffering I had done everything in my power to fix it and I had to rest in God, knowing that He would see me through.

Was it fair? Absolutely not! But God saw me through and brought me closer to Him because of the suffering. And for that, I am grateful for the suffering. Not that I ever want to do that again, but I am grateful.
