Are you looking for simple bible journaling ideas, scripture writing ideas and prayer journaling ideas? I’m not very artistic but love the idea of bible journaling! This list will help everyone, even the least artistic, with the creative side of Bible journaling.
What Is Bible Journaling
Bible journaling is a form of art that uses the pages of the Bible as a blank canvas. Bible journaling is a way to creatively express yourself while studying God’s Word—bringing out the creativity that lies within each of us.
The purpose of Bible journaling is to help you grow closer to God and to learn how to apply biblical principles in your life. No matter how long you have been journaling, no matter how experienced you are, there are always new ideas and creative ways to use your journal.
Bible journaling is a form of personal spiritual worship. It is a way to make the Bible come alive in a way that only you can present it. Bible journaling allows you to take your thoughts and feelings and ideas and put them down on paper. In fact, it is a very good way to make the Bible come alive to you personally. You can use Bible journaling for almost any part of the Bible or for different kinds of Bible study.
“Bible journaling is an exciting way to engage with Scripture. It can transform the way you spend time in the Word and it all begins within the margins of the Bible.
You will find a creative and fresh approach to the age-old discipline of Bible reading. With pen in hand, you can visually capture Scripture, meditate on God’s Word and memorize the text. Some choose to journal as an expression of private devotion, others journal as an act of worship and there are even some who consider it a creative outlet that can be shared.
No matter what your purpose for Bible journaling, the beauty of the movement is this: it doesn’t require a skilled artist. All that matters is that you’re willing to experience God and His Word in a creative way.” – LifeWay
This doesn’t have to be hard. Check out my list of simple Bible journal ideas below.
Is Bible Journaling Disrespectful
I don’t think so. However, with that said, you shouldn’t think of bible journaling as a substitute for Bible study and in-depth bible reading.
Simple Bible journaling is a creative outlet as we focus on certain scriptures. God can and will use this creative time to speak to our hearts, convict us of sin and encourage our thoughts – all to honor Him.
I have several bibles! One is from when I graduated high school and is falling apart and my newest one still has the crispness in its pages.
I’ve always underlined and highlighted in my bible. They have notes and doodles in its margins as well. If you decide to do the type of bible journaling that covers most of the words then it’s a good idea to keep a second bible for just reading and studying. Use a special journaling bible just for your creative outlet.
What Do You Write In A Journaling Bible
“Faith has always been a source of inspiration for artists, and the pages of the Bible itself are a re-discovered canvas for expression. Bible journaling may seem like a new-found art trend, but it is in fact ancient.
Until the 1400s, Scriptures were copied by hand with calligraphy and illustrations to make the Bible accessible to a mostly-illiterate public. The illustrations today serve instead to amplify the Scriptures, helping the artist to internalize truths and document their spiritual experiences in a creative way.” Artist Network
It’s what you make it. You write, doodle, draw, underline, highlight or whatever it looks like to you. Develop your creative side as you allow God’s word to inspire you and connect your heart deeper to our loving Heavenly Father.
What Is Creative Bible Journaling
Bible Journaling is NOT about trying to create the most beautiful creation and be in competition with everyone else. Bible journaling is about your heart and thoughts more than the final piece of art you just created. See the bible journaling ideas below.
“Bible journaling can be a little scary, especially if you’re not used to writing in your Bible before. For that reason, I recommend starting off with a verse that you know well and that means a lot to you. Starting with a verse that you are very familiar with helps take away some level of discomfort when it comes to journaling in your Bible for the first time, and it will help you come up with an idea faster.
At the same time, if you choose your absolute favorite verse, it may be difficult to come up with a design that includes everything it means to you. For that reason, choose one you know well and like, but maybe not the verse you’d paint on your living room ceiling.” Sara Laughed
Bible Journaling Examples

You can use it to enhance your Bible reading and teaching, or you can use it to record your thoughts and feelings about what you’re learning. Bible journaling is also a wonderful way to get closer to God, enhance your prayer life and grow in your faith.
Bible journaling can also be a way to keep a record of your spiritual journey as you read through the Bible. It’s also a great way to help you think about the meanings and messages behind what you’re reading. It is an activity where you can write, draw, and paint your ideas and thoughts about what you’re studying. It’s a great way to go deeper in your study of God’s word, so you’ll build a stronger, more meaningful relationship with God. The best part is, you can make it as simple or as creative as you want.

What Is Scripture Writing
Scripture writing falls under a Bible journaling idea. I’m not very artistic but have always enjoyed writing out scripture, doodling around the passages I’ve written and pray as I write. It’s my creative outlet!
“Scripture writing is simply the process of spending time with God and recording the scriptural insights you receive from Him in your Bible. For most of us, the process of Bible journaling begins by listening to God with a pen and highlighter in hand and recording what God says in the pages of our Bibles and spiritual journals so that we can more faithfully hear, meditate upon, and apply God’s Word to our lives.
Even though the term is relatively new, the concept of Bible journaling is not. In fact, we can find the directive for recording God’s words in Scripture itself.
• In Jeremiah 30:3, the Lord instructs the prophet to “Write in a book all the words I have spoken to you.”
• In Habakkuk 2:2, the Lord commands Habakkuk to “Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it.”
Listening to what God says to us, observing how He is interacting with us on a daily basis, and recording those things are at the heart of all Bible journaling.” – FaithGateway
