Bible verses about prayer

Sharing is caring!

Let’s take a look at prayer in the Bible. I’ve gathered a list of Bible verses about prayer for us to look at and go over. Grab the printable list of Bible verses about prayer below.

What is your earliest memory of prayer? Was it your grandmother praying? Your mother? A sibling? At Church? My earliest memory of prayer is with my mom. I remember her praying everyday in her room, usually with the door open.

My mom’s prayer space was the side of her bed and her nightstand. She had a well worn Bible, note cards or bits of paper with scripture and encouragement and a tissue. She cried when she prayed.

As a child I didn’t fully understand why my mom prayed so regularly, but now as an adult I realize that we can not make it one day without prayer and my mom lead by example.

Prayer is our source, our connection to God. And through prayer and reading the Bible we grow in our knowledge of God and that leads to our love for Him growing as well.

What Is Prayer?

What is prayer? Prayer is talking to God. It is you taking the time to tell God your heart, the good and the bad, your gratitude, seeking forgiveness and guidance. It is like talking to a friend. You are sharing your thoughts, feelings and asking Him to protect, heal and guide you and your family.

I have a guide to prayer and discuss all things prayer in that article.

Prayer is asking God to change us to bring Him glory. We remember to stand in awe and respect Him as we pray, but also completely knowing we are praying to the One who loves us more than anyone else in the world.

“So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or “What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

Matthew 6:31–34 (NIV)

1. Matthew 6:31-34 – How comforting is this verse? Life can be so hard and this verse is a great reminder that when we seek God first he will work all things out. We may not understand why we have to suffer or endure great pain, but we can safely trust God to comfort us and see us through.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.

Proverbs 3:5-6

2. Proverbs 3:5-6 – This bible verse is one I was asked to memorize as a teenager and I’m glad. I’m glad because on so many occasions I would recite this back to my heart to focus on God’s truth and not my own. When we acknowledge God in all our ways, and this includes seeking Him in prayer, we are showing God respect and asking for his help and guidance to see us through situations that we don’t understand.

I sought the LORD, and He answered me and delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to Him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed. Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!

Psalm 34:4–5, 8

3. Psalm 34:4-5,8 – I love reading through the prayers in Psalms. Mostly David’s prayers. Have you noticed that he is so very raw and honest with God? Read some of his prayers and you’ll see at the beginning he is completely showing his pain and concern to God but by the end of his prayer he is encouraging himself in the Lord. What a great example for us to follow.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:6–7 (NIV)

4. Philippians 4:6-7 – What should we do with our anxiety? Go to God in prayer for help! Of course, don’t hesitate to reach out to your therapist and/or Doctor when dealing with anxiety. You can love Jesus and have a therapist too! But, the point I want to make here is include God in every situation, good and bad. This verse tells us to bring our requests to God with thanksgiving.

Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time He may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on Him, because He cares for you.

1 Peter 5:6–7

5. 1 Peter 5:6-7 – What a lovely reminder that God cares for us and he wants us to give him all of our troubles and worries. Humbling ourselves in prayer to God is the best place to be when hard times come our way.

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

6. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 – It boils down to our mindset, doesn’t it? We are told in this verse to pray continually, rejoice always and give thanks in all circumstances. It’s important for us to ask God for help in having the right mindset as we work on having a prayer life that pleases God.

Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.

Romans 12:12

7. Romans 12:12 – Faithful in prayer. This bible verse call us to be joyful in hope, patient in hard times and faithful in prayer. What does this mean to be faithful in prayer? I wrote an article on 6 tips to be consist in prayer to help Christian women in their prayer life.

Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Hebrews 4:16

8. Hebrews 4:16 – We all need grace on a daily basis! And thank God for the grace He give us. This bible verse on prayer tell us to approach God with confidence, but still humbly so we may receive mercy and grace when we need it.

But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.

Luke 6:27-28

9. Luke 6:27-28 – Wow! What a challenge from God…to pray for our enemies, do good to those that hate us…Woah! That is a hard one for sure! But, this doesn’t mean we do not set healthy boundaries as we pray for our enemies.

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.

Romans 8:26

10. Romans 8:26 – We talked about this verse in the Holy Spirit Study! We can not pray effectively without the Holy Spirit. He helps us to pray, because we do not know what we ought to pray for. It’s comforting to know the Holy spirit intercedes for us.

Matthew 26:41

What does Matthew 26:41 mean? Jesus’ words provide a clear instruction for one way to battle temptation to do wrong: Prayer. Prayer is a God-given weapon against our own sinful desires. God means for believers to overcome temptation, in part, through urgent and faithful prayer (James 5:16). via BibleRef

Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.
