How To Memorize Scripture

I wrote an article on 13 Ways To Memorize Scripture. Enjoy these tips as you go over the best Psalms to memorize.

  1. Pick one or two verses or a whole chapter to memorize at a time. Know your limit. Set realistic goals. If you try to memorize a lot in one setting you may get frustrated and give up.
  2. Try to stick to one Bible translation.
  3. Read the passage of scripture out loud several times a day.
  4. Study that passage of scripture by looking up who the author is, who the audience is, the purpose the author is trying to make, look up any words you may not know. Look up the greek or Hebrew translation. I use the SOAP Bible Study Method to help me. Also, the Blue Letter Bible is a great tool as well.
  5. Read the verse with in context. This is so very important. This means read several verses before and after the verse or even the whole chapter you are trying to memorize to help you get a better understanding of the context. Again, context is vital.
  6. Write the verse out at least once a day. I love scripture writing for this!
  7. Write your memory verse on sticky notes and post them around your house so you can easily read it several times a day.
  8. Get an accountability partner. You can check in on each other’s progress, pray for each other and make it a bonding time with friends. Join my FB group HERE.
  9. Go for a Scripture memorization walk. Similar to a prayer walk, you can go alone or with a friend or two. Have your Scripture you want to memorize written down on a post it note and as you walk you keep reading it and saying it out loud. If you have friends with you on this Scripture memory walk have each friend take turns saying their verses out loud.
  10. Make up a song for the Scripture you are memorizing. Music is a great way to help us memorize things.
  11. Use the YouVersion Bible app or record yourself reading it out loud and then have it read the chapter or passage of scripture out loud back to you while you are cleaning, driving, cooking and before you go to bed.
  12. Once you’ve memorized your Scripture review it everyday for 30 – 60 days to help retain it to memory.
  13. Consistency is key!

Psalm 91 is a great Psalm for protection from all kinds of harm. It promises that God will protect those who trust in Him from all kinds of danger, both physical and spiritual.

Psalm 23 is a beautiful Psalm that offers comfort and protection from all kinds of troubles. It tells us that God is our shepherd, and that He will always be with us and protect us.

These are just a few of the many Psalms that offer protection and comfort. If you are feeling afraid or vulnerable, take comfort in these Psalms and know that God is with you and will protect you.

Best Psalms For Anxiety

There are many different Psalms that can be helpful for those who are struggling with anxiety.

“God, You are my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? You are the strength of my life, of whom shall I be afraid? When the wicked come against me to eat up my flesh, my enemies and foes, they stumbled and fell. Though an army may encamp against me, my heart shall not fear!” Psalm 27:1-3

Our remedy for worry. I included this passage in my list of the best Psalms to memorize, because life can be hard and we need to daily remind ourselves that God is on our side

“I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip—he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD watches over you—the LORD is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life; the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” Psalm 121:1-8

Psalm 121 is a beautiful reminder of God’s care for us, He is our help in times of need and how He will always watch over us.

Best Psalms For Kids

There are many different Psalms that are great for kids to learn and recite. Below are some of the ones I’ve chosen to be included in my list of the best Psalms to memorize.

May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer. Psalm 19:14

I remember having to memorize this passage when I was a teen. It’s a reminder and a challenge for our words and thoughts to be submitted to God.

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” – Psalm 46:1

There is no denying that difficult times will come, but our children can take solace in the fact that God has promised to be our refuge. When buildings come crashing down and our world is thrown into chaos, we can hold onto the hope that God has not failed us. He has promised to be with us even in the midst of tragedy.

Best Psalms For Healing

There are many different Psalms that can be used for healing. Each one has its own unique message and power. Here are two I’ve included in my list of the best Psalms to memorize.

Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
and he saved them from their distress.
He sent out his word and healed them;
he rescued them from the grave. Psalm 107:19-20

How often does God use His Word to heal, deliver, and set us free? I can recall times when I was very worried about a particular situation and, as I prayed, the Lord would place a scripture in my heart. And that scripture was just what I needed.

Healing may come now or God may make us wait till we are in Heaven, but His word promises to comfort us and save us through it all.

Have mercy on me, Lord, for I am faint; heal me, Lord, for my bones are in agony. My soul is in deep anguish. How long, Lord, how long? Turn, Lord, and deliver me; save me because of Your unfailing love. Psalm 6:2-4

I really like reading David’s prayers. I believe they are a great example to us on how we should pray.

David understands that the only way for him to improve his dire circumstances is to receive God’s grace, which he does not deserve. He knows that it is only by grace that the Lord saves and forgives. Thank God for His grace!

Best Psalms For Comfort

The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in Whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I called to the Lord, Who is worthy of all praise, and I have been saved from my enemies. Psalm 18:2-3

“About twenty times in Psalms the Lord is referred to as a Rock because of the security He provides for those who trust in Him (for example, Psalm 19:14; 28:1; 62:2; 94:22).” – Bible Ref

Believers today have the Lord Jesus Christ as our rock, refuge and shield.

The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; He delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Psalm 34:17-18

He hears us when we’re brokenhearted and crying out for help. He’s ready to listen and deliver us from our pain, even if it’s not in the way that we expect. We can trust that his deliverance will always be for our good, even if we don’t understand it at the time.

Best Psalms For Praising God

“He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the LORD and put their trust in him.” – Psalm 40:3

Sometimes, the only way through a bad day is to praise God. If today is rough, turn on a praise song and let God see you through.

“The whole earth is filled with awe at your wonders; where morning dawns, where evening fades, you call forth songs of joy.” – Psalm 65:8

Joy is a gift from God and something Christians have access to. Praise Him for this joy to see you through the good and bad days.

Best Psalms For Encouragement

Last but not least on my list of the best Psalms to memorize…

“In you, Lord my God, I put my trust. I trust in you; do not let me be put to shame, nor let my enemies triumph over me. No one who hopes in you will ever be put to shame but shame will come on those who are treacherous without cause.” Psalm 25:1-3

Our hope is in the Lord and we will never be put to shame when our source of hope come from God!

“The Lord protects and defends me; I trust in him. He gives me help and makes me glad; I praise him with joyful songs.” – Psalm 27:8

I’m so grateful for God’s protection! When I was at my lowest He showed up, provided and enveloped me in His love!

I pray these good psalms to memorize bless you today.
