How Does The Bible Say We Should Control Emotions

Here’s a list about what the Bible tells us on how to manage our emotions:

  1. Pray Regularly
    • When in doubt, talk it out with God. He’s always there to listen and guide you through your emotional highs and lows.
  2. Seek Wisdom
    • The book of Proverbs is filled with tidbits of wisdom on how to control your emotions and live a balanced life.
  3. Lean on Community
    • The New Testament emphasizes the importance of community. Share your feelings and concerns with a trusted circle of Christian friends and family.
  4. Practice Gratitude
    • Whenever you’re down or overwhelmed, counting your blessings can actually uplift your spirit. Gratitude has a way of putting things into perspective.
  5. Be Slow to Anger
    • James 1:19 advises us to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger. It’s a golden rule that applies to emotional management as well.
  6. Study Scripture
    • The Bible is a rich resource that speaks to a variety of emotional challenges. Use it as your guide whenever you’re feeling a little lost emotionally.
  7. Spread Love
    • When you experience joy, peace, or any other positive emotion, share that love with others. Jesus was the epitome of love and compassion, and we’re called to be like Him.
  8. Forgive and Forget
    • Negative emotions often stick around because we hold onto grudges. Jesus teaches us the liberating power of forgiveness.
  9. Rejoice in Suffering
    • This may sound strange, but trials and suffering can actually deepen your relationship with God. So even when times are tough, find a reason to rejoice.
  10. Put on the Armor of God
    • Ephesians 6 teaches us about wearing the armor of God, which includes virtues like truth, righteousness, and faith to protect against emotional pitfalls.

So there you have it! Keep these points in your heart and you’ll be well-equipped to manage your emotions in a way that honors God.

What Does God Say About Expressing Feelings

Feelings, emotions, moods – we all experience them, and sometimes they can feel like a whirlwind inside of us.

Have you ever wondered what the Bible says about expressing these feelings? Well, let’s dive into it!

1. God Created Our Emotions

First off, remember that our emotions are a part of God’s intricate design. He created us in His image (Genesis 1:27), and that includes our capacity to feel deeply. So, whether it’s joy, sorrow, anger, or love, know that these feelings are an integral part of our divine design.

2. It’s Okay to Be Honest with God

King David is a stellar example of this! He wasn’t shy about pouring out his heart to God. In the Psalms, David expressed a wide range of emotions, from profound joy and thanksgiving to deep sorrow and desperation. Psalm 62:8 says, “Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.” It’s a gentle nudge, letting us know that it’s perfectly okay to lay all our feelings before God.

3. Expression with Wisdom

While the Bible encourages us to be open about our emotions, it also counsels wisdom in how we express them. Proverbs 29:11 mentions, “A fool gives full vent to his spirit, but a wise man quietly holds it back.” It’s a beautiful reminder that while it’s okay to feel our feelings, it’s equally essential to express them thoughtfully and constructively.

4. Seek Comfort in Times of Distress

God is the ultimate source of comfort. Whenever we’re overwhelmed with feelings, especially those of sadness or distress, the Bible reminds us to turn to Him. As 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 says, “God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles.” So, in moments when you feel like a storm is raging inside, remember there’s always a safe harbor in Him.

5. Joy and Praise Are Encouraged

God loves it when we express our joy and gratitude! The Bible is filled with verses that encourage us to sing, dance, and be joyful. Psalm 95:1-2 says, “Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before him with thanksgiving…” It’s like an open invitation to celebrate all the good in our lives and share those joyful feelings with Him.

6. We’re Called to Share and Empathize

Romans 12:15 says, “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.” Our feelings aren’t just meant to be experienced in isolation. They’re also tools to connect with others, understand them, and share in their life journeys.

In wrapping up, it’s clear that God values our emotions and has given us guidance on how to navigate and express them.

So, whether you’re on top of the world or navigating a challenging season, remember that your feelings are valid, and God is always there to listen, comfort, and guide.

How To Live by Faith and Not Feelings

Living by faith can sometimes feel like trying to find your way with a compass when you’re used to relying on a detailed map (aka, our feelings).

While feelings are a wonderful part of our human experience, faith offers us a steady anchor, especially during life’s storms.

Ready to set sail? Here’s your practical guide!

1. Start Your Day with the Word

Just like breakfast fuels your body, the Word of God can fuel your soul. Make it a daily habit to read a scripture or a devotional. It’ll set the tone for your day and remind you of the bigger picture.

2. Prayer is Your Lifeline

Ever heard of the saying, “When in doubt, pray it out”? It’s a great one to live by. Regular conversations with God can keep your faith strong, helping you differentiate between the whispers of your feelings and the truth of His promises.

3. Surround Yourself with Faith-filled Friends

Who better to keep you on track than friends who are on the same journey? Connect with a community or a group that uplifts and supports your faith journey. Their encouragement and insights can be invaluable.

4. Journal Your Journey

Writing can be therapeutic. Note down moments when your faith guided you, and refer back to these notes when feelings threaten to take the driver’s seat. These written testaments will serve as powerful reminders of God’s consistent presence in your life.

5. Take Actionable Faith Steps

Faith without works can feel abstract. Challenge yourself! Maybe it’s volunteering, taking a leap in a new career inspired by your faith, or simply starting a faith-based study group. Doing something tangible based on your faith can help ground it in reality.

6. Limit Negative Inputs

Just like a diet filled with junk food can affect our physical health, constant negative input (be it media, toxic relationships, or excessive negativity) can impact our spiritual health. Be discerning about what you consume mentally and emotionally.

7. Practice Gratitude

Every day, find a few moments to reflect on the blessings in your life. Acknowledging God’s hand in the big and small moments will bolster your faith and shift your focus away from fleeting feelings.

8. Seek Mentorship

Find someone who exemplifies living by faith. Their journey, wisdom, and guidance can be a beacon for you, especially when feelings become overwhelming.

9. Remember Faith is a Muscle

Like any muscle, faith gets stronger with regular exercise. It’s okay to have moments of doubt; it’s a part of the journey. The key is to keep moving forward, learning, and growing in your faith.

And there you have it! As you journey through life, remember that feelings are wonderful companions that make our experiences rich and varied.

But, when it comes to guiding our steps, faith, grounded in God’s eternal truth, offers a clarity and consistency that feelings can’t match. Here’s to your beautiful journey of living by faith!

God And Our Feelings And Emotions

There is a list of Bible verses about emotions above. Personally, I don’t believe God intended our feelings to guide us.

He wants that job. God wants to be our guide.

Our feelings should not be what drives our decisions, but more of an indicator of what’s going on inside us.

We must put our trust in what God says and check our feelings at the door with the Word of God.

Hard times are a part of real life. We all, at some point, will walk through a hard time in life. Death of a loved one, betrayal of a friend, an affair, financial problems, etc.

Expect it. But even through the ugliest of days, God is still near and will not allow you to be overtaken by the difficult times, if we stay in prayer to Him.

Nor does He love you any less. Yes, we must choose Him, but His love for us never sways.

The Bible addresses emotions and feelings in many passages, both negative and positive.

While it is true that the Bible does not specifically mention the word “emotion” in the way we use it today, the Bible does address emotions and feelings in many passages.

The Bible addresses emotions and feelings in many passages, both negative and positive.

While it is true that the Bible does not specifically mention the word “emotion” or “feelings” in the way we use it today, the Bible does address emotions and feelings in many passages.

It is important to remember that the Bible was written to address people in all of their ups and downs, so it is helpful to consider the fact that the Bible may have something to say about your feelings.

God’s Word and prayer combined are like dynamite in the hands of a Christian.

Want to know how to fight the powers of this dark world? That’s how. With prayer and scripture. EVERYDAY!

Give God your best time…the best you. Is that in the morning? Or afternoon? Or maybe evenings?

Choose to make that time, when you are at your best,  your quiet time with the Lord.

Journaling For Emotional Healing

Scripture Writing helps with controlling emotions. Grab my list of Bible Verses on Controlling Emotions above or print off one of my other scripture writing plans, grab your bible, notebook, favorite pens, and markers, and find your quiet spot.

Settle in for quality prayer time with God. Rotate prayer and reading God’s word.

Pray before you start. Ask God to open your heart and mind to what He wants you to know that day. Ask Him to guide you, your feelings, and your emotions.

Ask for forgiveness and a repentant heart. I dare say go a step further and ask God for a deeper conviction of things in your life that hurts Him. So you may turn away from them.

Read your bible. Start in any book you feel led to read and every day continue reading in that book of the Bible till you are done. Then pick a new book and continue.
