Fighting the Uphill Battle

For months now, I’ve woken up every morning and just wanted to roll over and go back to sleep. It has been constant struggle after struggle and battle after battle. There has not been more than a few days since March that I have felt relaxed or not stressed. For a 22 year old, (who’s not in college) that’s ridiculous. I have faced (and overcome) many challenges and I now want to share my story, and my inspiration with you.

Five months ago I was having a splendid day at work, (at the time I worked at a daycare) and I was just getting all the kids ready to go outside and play when my boss came over and handed me the phone; assuming it was my husband I smiled and gave a warm greeting.

 “Hello is this Amanda?”

 “Yes, this is she.”

“Hello Amanda, this is Dr. **** from the endocrinology department. I just wanted to call and let you know that your tests came back positive. You have cancer. If you have any questions please give me a call or stop by the office.”

Click. He had hung up the phone and I was surrounded by small smiling faces waiting to have their shoes and coats put on so they could go outside and play. The world had not stood still in that very moment for them. They had not just had that enormous weight put on their shoulders. But I couldn’t help them. Not then, not there. I looked to my fellow staff member with tears in my eyes as she took over and got the children ready.

Fast forward one month. I’ve been forced to leave my job, I’m one month away from my wedding and I’m recovering from surgery. Groggy, unable to function other than watching Netflix and laying in bed. The loneliness, the stress of an upcoming wedding that had hardly been planned and the sorrow knowing that I was not able to function well or do anything for anyone. I spent the rest of the month like this, up until the days before my wedding.  (If you would like to continue to read about my cancer story, you can continue doing so here.)

Following the wedding we found ourselves in a very quick move and as soon as we started settling down in our new house (where we had moved in with my mother) she fell ill and has been that way ever since. It has been nothing but an uphill battle these past few months and I would not have gotten through it if it wasn’t for my Lord.

Before I go on to talk about how I got through it all, I would like to say that what I have been through is not the hardest thing I will go through in my life, but has so far been the hardest. There are many others going through much more difficult things in their lives and my heart and prayers go out to them.

To get through this for me has been very difficult, it has come with a lot of pain and disappointment. It has left me praying for strength, faith and a determined spirit. I know now that even though I am still going through troubled times that there is light at the end of the tunnel. So, here are some bible verses to help uplift your spirits and give you hope:

But he said, What is impossible with men is possible with God. -Luke 18:27

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. -1 Corinthians 10:13

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. -Proverbs 3:5

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. -Hebrews 13:8

But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, Do not fear, only believe.-Mark 5:36

  My personal favorite:

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. -Joshua 1:9

Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. -Isaiah 41:10

Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. -1 Peter 5:7

Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you. -Deuteronomy 31:6

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. -Philippians 4:6-8

I hope these verses help you as they have helped me get through the tough days where I have learned to trust in God. May your prayers be answered and your rainy days be met with rainbows of all colors.

May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind always be at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, and rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
