Be Still And Know: A Reminder To Slow Down

“Be still and know that I am God” is a reminder to slow down, take a breath, and remember that we are not in control of everything, but God is. Grab my Be Still And Know scripture writing list below.

Sometimes, it can be difficult to slow down and rest in God in our fast-paced, constantly-connected world.

I remember back a few years ago, when we had an extended stay in Mexico, that the washing machine was flooding our tiny apartment. Water was all over the concrete and tile floors and even poured out into the street that came right up to our doorway. I couldn’t figure out how to turn the water off!

On top of the stress of a flooded apartment, water was to be rationed where we lived. It only ran on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in our community. We had to be home when the water was turned on to make sure it filled up our Rotoplases. (Large plastic type barrels with lids that are on top of your home to hold water and transport water to your bathrooms, washing machine and kitchen.)

If we were careful with our water usage, we would have enough of water to meet all of our needs. But this day I cried ugly tears as I have swept large amounts of water out the kitchen door. Our precious water had overflowed from the washing machine and poured onto the kitchen and outside to the alleyway.

It had already been a stressful week of long bus rides back and forth to the immigration office. I was working on getting my residency card and the paperwork that was started here in the States was not done correctly by the staff and no one would help via the phone so we had to go in person. It was a stressful mess.

As I cried I remember praying for God to help me turn the water off and to calm my heart.

When life triggers feelings of uncertainty, fear and exhaustion, let’s hold on to the hope of Psalm 145:18, “The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.”

Our hard times can be holy times, close-to-God times. And wherever God is, good is being worked.

It is important to remember that we are not alone in our struggles and that there is a power greater than ourselves that we can safely trust.

By taking the time to be still and connect with God, we can find peace and strength knowing that we are not alone in our hardships.

You will keep in perfect peace

    those whose minds are steadfast,

    because they trust in you.

Isaiah 26:3

Be Still And Know

Be still and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10.

In english, the verb “still” means silence, calm, settle and stop motion. Though this is the definition we are most familiar with, the way we use “be still” in English is a little different from the Hebrew word. The instruction to “be still” in Hebrew means to let go, relax, refrain, let alone and let drop. – Blue Letter Bible

It’s a picture of loosening our clenched fist on the circumstances and the outcome on our situation and trusting God who’s sovereign over both.

As someone who is always fixing and pushing through, I understand that being still goes against our instincts sometimes. We want to make it happen and force an outcome. However, the call to be still and know is a call to surrender, rest and trust God.

When we rest in God’s character, we are trusting that He is who He says He is. We are confident in His love for us, His power to work in our lives, and His desire to bless us.

We know that He is good and that His plans for us are good. We can rest assured that He will never leave us or forsake us. His character is perfect, and we can rely on Him to lead us and guide us.

When we rest in God’s love, we are filled with a sense of peace and calm. We walk in His joy even when we are experiencing sorrow.

It is as if all the worries of the world are lifted from our shoulders and we can just breathe a sigh of relief. We know that we are loved unconditionally and no matter what happens, we are safe in the arms of our Heavenly Father.

This is a place of complete rest and security, where we can let go of all our fears and just trust God. It is a beautiful feeling as we press in to our relationship with God in or to be still and know.

Meaning Of Be Still And Know That I Am God

The phrase “be still and know that I am God” is a bible verse from the Book of Psalms that is often quoted as a means of providing comfort and reassurance in times of trouble.

You will sometimes see it on the side of a coffee cup or a t-shirt or a meme on social media.

Be still, and know that I am God;

I will be exalted among the nations,

I will be exalted in the earth!

Psalm 46:10

The verse is a reminder that even when the world is in chaos, God is still in control and can be trusted to provide guidance and strength.

In the midst of chaos, the best thing we can do is to take a moment to be still and reflect on God’s Lordship and sovereignty in our lives. This can help us to remember that no matter what happens, we are never alone and that God has good plans for whatever we are going through.

The phrase, be still and know, is a reminder to Christians that God is always present and in control, even when things seem chaotic or out of control. It is a reminder to trust in God and to have faith that He will work everything out for the best.

The phrase can also be applied to other areas of life, not just during times of trouble. It can be a reminder to slow down and take a moment to appreciate all that God has done for us. Cherishing the small moments in life.

It can be a reminder to be grateful for the good things in our lives, and to have faith that God will continue to bless us.

How Can I Be Still And Wait On God

God’s people can “be still” by faithfully trusting God to be their source of strength (Exodus 14:13).

The key to being still and waiting on God is to continually build up your faith.

Life can be so hard sometimes. It may be difficult to be still and have faith when everything in life is constantly moving in pain and chaos.

However, when we have faith and trust in God, we can be still and know that He is in control.

  • We can wait on God to show us His plan for our lives and situation.
  • When we are still, we are able to hear God’s voice and see His calling on our lives more clearly.
  • We can also spend time in prayer and meditation, which can help us to be more in tune with God’s will for our lives.

How Can I Be Still And Know

There are many ways to be still and wait on God.

  1. One way is to find a quiet place where you can be alone with your open Bible and prayers.
  2. Another way is to listen to worship music that can help you to focus your thoughts on God.
  3. You can also try to a walk outside to help you get away from everything and relax your body and mind and focus on your connection with God.
  4. Whatever method you choose, the important thing is to be patient and persistent in your quest to find stillness and wait on God.

One of the most difficult things for us to do as humans is to be still and wait on God. We are always striving and busy, and it can be hard to slow down and just be.

As a single mom of two teens, owner of this ministry and business I completely see where I need to be more intentionally to slow down and be still before God.

When we take the time to be still and wait on God, we open ourselves up to His presence and peace. We can quiet our minds and hearts, and listen for His voice. We can pray and meditate on His Word, and let go of our worries and concerns. In the stillness, we can find His strength and guidance.

So how can we be still and wait on God?

  1. First, we need to make the decision to do so. Consistently.
  2. We need to set aside time each day to be quiet and still. We can get up a little earlier in the morning, or go to bed a little later at night.
  3. We can turn off the television, and put away our phones and computers.
  4. We can light a candle and sit in silence. And we can simply breathe. Listen to a good sermon. Or do some journaling.

To be still in this verse doesn’t mean doing nothing.

  • It doesn’t mean to give up and sit down.
  • It doesn’t mean to quit doing the next thing God called us to do.
  • It doesn’t mean to wait for God to do everything.

When we take the time to be still and wait on God, we are making space for Him in our lives. We are opening ourselves up to His presence, and we can trust that He will meet us there.

How Many Times Does The Bible Tell Us To Be Still

The Bible tells us to be still in many different places and for different reasons. In some cases, it is a command to simply cease physical action and rest for a moment. In other cases, it is an admonishment to quiet our minds and hearts, to be free from worry or fear, and to trust in God.

According to the Blue Letter Bible, “Be Still” is mentioned 61 times in the ESV version, 60 times in the KJV version, and 101 times in the NIV version.

Stillness is a key part of a healthy relationship with God. It gives us a chance to reflect on God’s goodness and mercy, and to remember that He is always in control. Even in the middle of the storms of life.

When we are still before God, we are more likely to hear His voice speaking to us through His Word, and to feel His presence with us.

The next time you are feeling overwhelmed or stressed, take a few moments to be still. Sit or lie down in a quiet place, close your eyes, and breathe deeply. Turn on an audio version of the Bible or a good sermon and just listen.

Allow God’s peace to envelope you today.
