30 Day Christian Mindfulness Prompts

Inside: Christian Mindfulness examples and journal

Many bible verses encourage us to slow down and be still before God. Being mindful to do just that has really helped my stress and anxiety levels as a christian. I created a 30 day Christian Mindfulness Journal that is filled with scripture and a daily journaling prompt to help you slow down every day and notice the small blessings around you.

In short, mindfulness simply means to be aware of your thoughts, feelings, body, whats going on around you, blessings etc. For example, as a busy mom I wake up and hit the floor running. My to-do list is huge. But, I’ve have been being more mindful, or intentional, to slow down and enjoy my quiet mornings. The sound of the birds chirping, the warmth of my coffee cup, the smell of the fresh brewed coffee, the way the pages of my Bible feel and the sound it makes as I turn each page. Noticing all the small blessings from God in my life and taking a moment to enjoy them through all the senses God gave us. Just being more aware of the small things in my life. These are God’s blessings.

I used to rush through my mornings and couldn’t even remember what I had for breakfast or what bible verses I had read let alone slow down to take a deep breath and appreciate all God has done and is doing in my life. Taking the time to slow down, especially in my morning time with God, has been a tremendous help to calm my anxieties through out the day.

That’s why I created these spiritual journal prompts and compiled them all into a 30 day christian mindfulness journal.

What Is The Christian View Of Mindfulness?

I love how Focus On The Family describes Christian mindfulness,

“Generally speaking, mindfulness is a technique of deliberately focusing your attention on the present. You don’t let yourself be distracted by other thoughts constantly running through your head; you clear “noise” from your mind. (Have you ever done a brain dump journal? This article has a section that explains it all.)

Mindfulness (some use the word grounding or slowing down to reflect) is characterized by meditation and relaxation techniques. The idea is to become more self-aware. You pay attention to thoughts, feelings, and sensations in that moment — without purposefully deciding whether they’re good or bad, and without becoming overwhelmed or overly reactive. In short, you tune in to what’s real right now.

Like anything, mindfulness can be misused. However, it doesn’t automatically contradict the Christian faith. We just need to make sure we approach it in a wise, biblical way.”

What Does The Bible Say About Being Mindful?

Be still, and know that I am God;

I will be exalted among the nations,

I will be exalted in the earth!

Psalm 46:10 NKJV

From a biblical perspective, we know that only Jesus can truly bring us peace no matter the circumstances. When we try to fight for our own peace in some human way – we will never fully achieve it apart from learning to trust and obey him (as the Bible tells us to). Things such as studying your Bible, prayer, worship and being intentional to slow down and take it all in can help you become a much stronger Christian who knows how to stand firm against life’s toughest trials.

Do not get side tracked with this. Just like anything else, there are mindfulness and meditation techniques that do not honor God and we need to be careful to not start listening to or practicing anything that would go against God and His word. Only God can meet out deepest needs for peace.

God must be at the center of our thoughts and self reflection for us to heal, have true peace and live a life that honors God.

What Is The Difference Between Mindfulness And Christian Meditation?

Honestly, I don’t do any meditation or secular mindfulness. Or rather I don’t call anything I do as meditation. Some might say that reading the bible, praying to God or listening to worship songs are a form of meditation.

Thinking/focusing (meditating) on God’s word and prayer is a great way, I have found, to unplug from work and relax. Listening to specific passages of scripture that you have chosen for the day can help reinforce a sense of calm in order to get your mind off other things. God is the source of our peace and healing.

God’s word tells us to renew our minds and grow in our faith. How do we accomplish this? By reading the Bible.

So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

Romans 10:17

When Christians think biblically, we see things defined through the lens of Scripture. Being mindful is not what we might call a bad thing at all.

The Psalms are filled with exhortations to meditate on all the qualities of God.

Psalm 1:1–2 encourages mindfulness: “Blessed is the one . . . whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.”

Jesus was also very aware of His surroundings, self reflected and of course took time to slow down, and get away by himself to pray. We can be that same way because after all Jesus did urge us to follow His example.

Christians can be mindful of Christ by taking every thought captive for Christ and renewing their minds with the truth (2 Corinthians 10:5; Romans 12:2). In order to do this one must examine themselves (2 Corinthians 13:5) but they always need to rely on God’s help when it comes down to doing so because only He knows our hearts (Psalm 139:23–24).

As Christians, I believe, we need to be careful not to do any meditation or mindfulness techniques that are not honoring our Heavenly Father. Our focus is God and his blessings, his word, his truth and not on us alone or anything we can do in our own power.

Bible Verses About Being Mindful

Here are just a few of my favorite Bible verses about Christian mindfulness, slowing down and being intentional about God.

For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him.

Psalm 62:5 ESV

A wonderful reminder is given to us, here in this verse, to wait for God because he is our hope.

But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.

Luke 5:16 NIV

Christ is our example and here we are told that he withdrew from all of life’s distractions to focus on God and pray.

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Matthew 6:34 NIV

A comforting verse to no go about worrying and stressing, but to live focused on Christ.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Romans 12:2-3

How do we renew our minds and thought patterns? By slowing down to daily read the Bible and pray. Taking it all in and applying it to our life. This doesn’t happen by rushing through our devotional time to get it marked off our to-do list.

Why Should A Christian Write In A Journal

If you are looking for a way to reduce stress, calm the nerves and lower anxiety, journaling has been found to be a great tool to help!

“Expression of emotions concerning stressful or traumatic events can produce measurable effects

Holstee.com says, “Studies have also shown that journaling can reduce the frequency of intrusive, depressive thoughts, help college students who are vulnerable to depression, and reduce overall levels of depression in those diagnosed with a Major Depressive Disorder. Journaling has also been shown to reduce symptoms of anxiety.”

Christian mindfulness through journaling may help you reduce stress, reduce anxiety, cope with heartbreaking moments in your life and provide the opportunity to slow down and self reflect in a way that honors God.

What Should A Christian Write In A Christian Mindfulness Journal

For me, I find it helpful to focus on all the small things God has blessed me with, the Word of God, scripture writing, things I’m learning about God, how I’m healing and growing in my faith, the singing of birds, the fresh brewed coffee and the way it sounds and smells, the quiet mornings to pray and be thankful.

Really, you can write anything that keeps you focused on God, His word and His truth. Since starting the journal I’ve been able to stop the hurrying I would normally do and slow down to listen and notice God’s fingerprints all around me. And how could we not feel more at peace when we realize God surrounds us.
