Is it Wrong to Question God?
Can we question God? Is it wrong to question God? Is it a sin?
I’ve seen so much pain and have sat with a tear stained face asking God so many “why” questions. Why is there so much pain? Why is sin and evil allowed to run ramped amongst our people? Why are we struggling in the same strongholds year after year? Why is a dear loved one taken to soon?
Why are our churches filled with unrepentant sin, affairs, porn, gossip, lies, greed and divorces?
Can We Question God?
My answer: Respectfully, we can, yes.
I’m reading in the book of Habakkuk. Habakkuk was a prophet of God and the first 2 or 3 chapters are just Habakuk and God talking. Habakkuk is asking God lots of hard questions and he is very discouraged.
The prophet initiated this conversation based on his distress about God’s “inaction” in the world. He wanted to see God do something more, particularly in the area of justice for evildoers.
Have you been there? In Habakkuk’s shoes? Having to watch pain and hurt and then feel like God is silent?
The book of Habakkuk pictures a frustrated prophet turning his frustration into prayers and eventually praise to God, rather than trying to run from the Lord.
That is shout worthy truth!! Worshipping God in the pain is possible!
Please take this in for a moment. God is big enough to take your raw, hard emotions and questions.
No wall is to thick and no darkness so black that God does not hear nor can not see!
Understanding God’s Love
In chapter two, God answers Habakkuk’s question. He urges everyone to be patient and ultimately trust in Him. ”Behold, as for the proud one, His soul is not right within him; but the righteous will live by his faith” (2:4).
Chapter 3, Habakkuk gives God the glory and praise for faithfully responding to his questions, “LORD, I have heard the report about You and I fear. O LORD, revive Your work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the years make it known; in wrath remember mercy” (3:2).
God’s love is above everything else. I believe that if we renew our minds and hearts daily on God’s word when bad things happen and our questions arise, God’s love will comfort us and direct us as we seek Him for answers.
Is questioning God a sin?
Not so long as when we ask questions we do so humbly and respectfully. So, respectfully yes, we can bring our questions to the Lord, so long as we come submitted and truly seeking Him, His love, His will and His plan.
And we must accept the answer of wait too. He is God and it’s in His timing, not ours. That’s why I say respectfully ask your questions. He is the potter and we are the clay.
God’s report is Good. Wise. Enough.
So when we find ourselves frustrated and hurting let’s remember that our feelings are not facts, emotions roll by like the waves of the sea. Choose to think on what God wants us to think on and patiently wait for God to speak and move.
What to do when waiting for God to move?
If God’s answer is to wait, what do you do while waiting for God?
I love scripture writing! Bible journaling is great too. Any outlet for studying God’s word on a daily basis. But I personal enjoy scripture writing.
